Sensor monitors hydraulic oil quality

June 11, 2012
Wouldn’t it be great if you could monitor the oil condition of hydraulic fluid in real time while the equipment is running? RMF Systems, Waddinxveen, Netherlands, recently introduced its OQS Oil Quality Sensors. The OQS constantly monitors moisture, oxidation, contamination, acid build up, wear particles, additive breakdown, and other fluid characteristics. An accompanying display shows oil condition in real time, plus rate of change data and trends.

Those already using equipment-monitoring systems can add the OQS to any of several standard interfaces, such as 4-20 mA, Canbus, and RS232/RS485. Results can also be displayed on the company’s own stand-alone and PC display systems.

Oil Quality Sensor, left, constantly monitors key characteristics of hydraulic fluids, including moisture content, oxidation, contamination, acid build up, wear particles, additive breakdown, etc. The sensor can be used with a variety of electronic control systems, or with any of the company’s own displays, right.

The sensors and displays are engineered and tested to be permanently installed on hydraulic systems in marine, mining, construction and other mobile equipment applications, as well as industrial hydraulic systems. Accurate oil condition monitoring can dramatically reduce breakdowns and allow service intervals to be scheduled according to need rather than fixed, often-arbitrary time intervals.

According to Gerben Gerken, Manager, Oil Management Hydraulics at RMF, “Until today, sensors could only give a very rough indication of oil condition. With our technology you know the condition of your oil at all times, so you know when to conduct a service, saving thousands in lost operating time and unnecessary servicing costs; not to mention benefiting the environment.”
