Dealing with overhung load

Whether input power comes from an electric motor, gasoline or diesel engine, or PTO on a transmission, hydraulic pumps typically are driven through an industry-standard flange. This arrangement ensures that the mating shafts are always aligned and that no side load is transmitted to the pump’s input shaft.

Belt drives, however, create overhung load in transmitting power from one shaft to another. The result can be excessive side load on the driven shaft of a hydraulic pump. Excessive side load on the pump’s shaft would cause premature wear of its main seal and bearing, leading to fluid leakage and eventual early failure of the pump.
