ATEX-Certified Connectors from ATAM Enable Use in Hazardous Areas

July 18, 2024
The ATEX and IECEx certified solenoid valve cable connectors ensure safe operation in potentially explosive environments.

ATAM, a manufacturer of encapsulated coils and industrial connectors for process and solenoid valves for use in pneumatic and hydraulic applications, has introduced solenoid valve cable connectors with ATEX (EU Directive) and IECEx (international) certification. Inclusion of these certifications ensures safe use of the connectors in fixed or mobile applications in hazardous environments.

Both certifications indicate products can be used in potentially explosive enviroments and meet all safety requirements for operation in such conditions. The company worked together with the necessary experts to self-certify its Form A (18 mm) and Form B (11 mm) connectors.

Several industries, such as oil and mining, require such certifications due to the presence of gases, vapors and dust which can create explosive atmospheres in the vicinity of an ignition source (e.g. hot surfaces, electrical material, electrostatic charges, mechanical sparks, etc.). According to ATAM, about 70% of industrial environments are susceptible to this type of risk, making it necessary to utilize components and machines that will not cause safety issues due to these conditions.

The connectors are certified for use in 3G (gas/vapours) and 3D (powder/dust) category equipment according to the ATEX classification which also ensures a suitable level of protection in Zone 2 and Zone 22.

ATAM undertook these certifications due to requests from customer who are already using the company's ATEX-certified coils and wanted connectors which could be used in conjuction with them to ensure compatibility and safety. The company said the connectors can also be used with coils from other suppliers.

By now offering both components with the ATEX and IECEx certifications, ATAM can provide customers with a full-system solution, easing sourcing for customers.
