Multifunctional Pressure Switch Goes High Tech

March 10, 2016
Mead’s digital pressure switch not only provides programmable high and low switching setpoints and digital output signals, but also shows system pressure on an integrated LCD interface.

A new digital pressure switch developed by Mead Fluid Dynamics combines the versatility of field programmability with a pressure readout from an LCD interface.

A continuing trend in factory automation equipment is integration of multiple functions into a single, compact component. A new digital pressure switch from Mead Fluid Dynamics (MFD) follows that pattern. Mead’s digital pressure switch not only provides programmable high and low switching setpoints and digital output signals, but also shows system pressure on an integrated LCD interface.

Most air-preparation components provide some form of basic pressure measurement, such as a small analog gauge embedded or screwed into a threaded port that often is optional. Pressure-switching capability would come with a separate component that could require manual setting and resetting.

With a conventional analog gauge, a machine operator may have to periodically check system pressure visually and adjust pressure up or down for the machine to run correctly.  The MFD digital pressure switch can be programmed to generate a signal if pressure drifts above or below a prescribed pressure range. In response, the machine would act accordingly by stopping a process, switching on a compressor, or alerting the operator.

The MFD switch replaces these basic gauges and switches with a single device that screws into the same port otherwise used for an analog gauge. The switch indicates pressure on its LCD, and its dual electronic outputs can be routed to a PLC or other electronic control. Analog output is also available for continuous monitoring and control of pressure.

The MFD digital pressure switch is IP65-rated and comes in one size to installation in a 1/8-in. NPT pressure-gauge port. Two individually programmed sinking (NPN) or sourcing (PNP) outputs are standard, with 1- to 5-V or 4- to 20-mA analog output as an option. A copy function lets users automatically copy pressure settings to a second pressure switch. Users can also adjust response time to eliminate chatter. Pressure setting ranges from –14.5 to 145 psi (–0.01 to 1.0 MPa).
