Summary
Robust, consistent, and efficient load holding is a defining attribute of modern hydraulic systems. Bosch Rexroth has been developing this technology for over fifty years and remains a leading supplier around the world today. Join us in this webinar, as introduce the principles of check, counterbalance, and load metering valves; how they are applied, and the common pitfalls to avoid.
Beginning with the basic function of each valve type, this webinar will provide an overview of Rexroth’s portfolio, with a range of real-world applications for each given valve. These applications will include articulating booms, slew drives, telescopic booms, outriggers and winches. As well as this, viewers will learn the different principles governing both pilot operated check valves and counterbalance valves, together with guidelines of when to apply standard, vented, or compensated type counterbalance valves.
In the final part of the webinar, we will introduce systems for gravity lowering and electronic control that, compared to traditional load holding, can increase the efficiency, stability and comfort of hydraulic systems whilst ultimately reducing the amount of components required.
Key Takeaways:
- Learn about the differences between Counterbalance Valves and Pilot-Operated Check Valves
- An overview of the types of standard Counterbalance Valves and which to apply, to which application
- The advantages of Parts-in-Body and Cartridge valve load holding solutions
- How gravity lowering can increase the energy efficiency of hydraulic systems
- The use of electronic lowering valves to stabilize functions

Ross Johannes leads HydraForce America’s Technical Support team and Vehicle R&D Lab. Introduced to the off-road equipment working at his family’s plant nursery, he studied Agricultural Engineering and Fluid Power at University, later joining Bosch Rexroth Engineering at the Bethlehem Pennsylvania location in 2016.
Ross worked for seven years in Rexroth Compact Hydraulics, designing valves, power units and hydraulic systems for mobile and industrial equipment. As a valve designer Ross specialized in hybrid solutions of Rexroth’s diverse products and now augments this approach with the inclusion of HydraForce’s leading valve portfolio.
