Waste Expo is held every year and while it is normally held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, every fourth year it takes place in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. This is one of those years.

This year’s event is scheduled for May 8 to 11, with exhibits opening on May 9. The exhibit hall will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 9 and 10, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11. Register here

Waste Expo will host dozens of exhibitors offering fluid power products.

Selected Sessions

Although the conference program is geared toward owners and operators within the waste and recycling industry, some sessions are of general interest, as outlined here.

Cooling Package Maintenance: From Start to Finish

As part of the Fleet Management Collection track, two experts will present their knowledge on cooling systems in refuse trucks and other vehicles and equipment. The session will review maintenance and troubleshooting for on-off, two-speed, and viscous fan drives. It will also discuss best practices and safety considerations for choosing coolants and radiators in various applications.

The session will occur from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on May 8, the day before the conference. Speakers will be Michael Ellis from AKG of America and Dan Holdmeyer from Chevron. Mark Pusateri from Horton will moderate the session.

The Future of Smart Trucks

This seminar will address the newest features in garbage trucks, and how regulations, standards, necessities, and new technologies will shape future truck designs. Equipment manufacturers will learn how they may expect to change operations over the next five to ten years. The session will take place on May 8 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Hydraulics is often the powerhouse behind mobile machinery used in the waste stream, all the way from collection and sorting.

CNG: Trucks to Fueling Stations

Manufacturers and end-users will discuss the pros and cons of adopting service trucks and vehicles that use compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative to gasoline, diesel, and liquid petroleum. CNG vehicles are credited with lowering greenhouse gas emissions to potentially meet future emission standards and improve a company’s reputation. As prices drop, some companies are adopting more CNG fueled fleets, and building strategies to reliably access fueling stations. The session will discuss how to build proprietary CNG stations and partner with other suppliers to improve accessibility for fleets. Other topics will relate to vendor selection, permitting, construction, and maintenance of fueling stations. This session will take place on May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Diversity & Gender Issues in the Workplace

Experts will address ways to diversify the work force, touching on issues like how to recruit the best employees for key positions, bridging the employment age gap, equalizing the industry to recruit more women, and effective succession planning techniques. This session will take place Monday May 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
