Latest Technologies Come in Compact HPU

The CytroBox incorporates all the systems typically found in conventional HPUs in one quiet, compact, and energy-efficient package.

No, this is not a picture of the latest refrigerator-freezer from Bosch Home Appliances. It’s the CytroBox, an industrial hydraulic power unit incorporating all the systems typically found in conventional HPUs, but incorporated into one quiet, compact, and energy-efficient package that’s IIoT-ready for implementing Industry 4.0 concepts.

The “refrigerator” (lower section) of the HPU contains a fixed-displacement, axial piston pump powered by a variable-speed electric drive, small reservoir, 3D sand core-printed manifold block, filtration system, and other support systems, including an array of sensors for monitoring operation, predictive maintenance, and diagnostics.

Recently introduced by Bosch Rexroth, the Cyrtrobox also contains extensive electronic control and monitoring systems in its upper section. Power ratings for this initial launch range from 7.5 to 30 kW. A combination of the latest technologies makes the CytroBox up to 80% more efficient than conventional HPUs of comparable output.

The futuristic CytroBox, from Bosch Rexroth, combines several cutting-edge technologies to make a compact complete hydraulic power unit that can be up to 80% more efficient than a conventional HPU and sound emission of less than 75 dBA at full load.

Multiple Innovations

A key system of the CytroBox is a 3D sand core printing manifold block, which is up to 40% smaller than modular and has optimized flow channels for greater flow efficiency, lower pressure losses, and minimal site of potential leakage. An active dewatering unit against reduces the potential for external contamination.

Contributing to the small footprint of the CytroBox is a downsized reservoir with optimized degassing and flow. CFD simulation allowed designers to reduce oil volume by 76%—from 600 l to only 50 l. High-performance, water-cooled synchronous motors also conserve space; they are up to 80% smaller than comparable asynchronous ones.

Furthermore, airborne sound is absorbed in one unitary housing and built-in sound insulating mats. Structure-borne noise is also reduced by rigidly mounting the motor-pump group to a polymer-concrete foundation. Damping bearings, which otherwise transmit noise to the tank, are completely eliminated. Consequently, the noise emission of the CytroBox is less than 75 dBA—even at full load. Comparable power units have an average noise level of 85 dBA.
