How Telemetry and Wireless Communication are Improving Productivity in Agriculture

Jan. 9, 2024
Marcus Specks of HAWE Hydraulik provides insight on how telemetry systems and wireless communication in modern tractors are increasing the efficiency and productivity of farming operations.

Telemetry systems and wireless communication have become common features of modern agricultural equipment, helping to transform the way data is collected, used and disseminated. The technology allows farmers to analyze field-specific data, enhancing yields and seed selection for subsequent seasons.

These capabilities are possible due to the increased incorporation of electronics in tractors and other agricultural equipment, bringing about greater precision, efficiency and adaptability. Marcus Specks, key market manager at HAWE Hydraulik, said that monitoring sensors embedded in machine components facilitate real-time feedback, thereby elevating the precision and control over systems such as the hydraulics.

He added that the deployment of CANbus communication, which streamlined wiring harnesses and facilitated weight reduction, has augmented the overall operational efficiency of modern tractors. This integrated approach not only simplifies the wiring system, but also reduces costs and improves compatibility with various implements.

In this first of a three-part interview, Specks gives Power & Motion insight into the transformative impact of telemetry and wireless communication. Large-scale machines such as field sprayers, liquid manure applicators and seeding machines have experienced significant gains in efficiency and precision through use of these systems. Their transition to CANbus has simplified processes, reduced wiring complexities and elevated diagnostic surveillance capabilities, amplifying the operational effectiveness of these advanced agricultural machines.
